Business challenge

Kumulate, Masstech’s flagman solution, is an intelligent content storage and lifecycle management platform able to work with a huge range of MAMs, PAMs, NRCS systems, and NLEs. In 2019 striving to offer additional workflow benefits to Adobe Premiere Pro users Masstech turned to Tecom Group to integrate Kumulate with Adobe’s flagship editing app.

Technology Solution

Tecom Group developed a custom plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro to facilitate the integration of both platforms. The design and development of the plugin were done from the scratch and carried out by the Tecom Group team thanks to its unique expertise in the industry.

The plugin has direct access to the editing program API and allows one to import all the data requested by Kumulate.

 Main features of the plugin:

• Smart archiving both of individual Premiere Pro files and complete projects to Kumulate
• Content moving from archive to editing storage, including individual sequences, complete projects, or selected files
• Partial file restore by marking in and out points
• Mapping of the programs’ metadata 
• Automatic search and restoring of archived Kumulate content in the current Premiere Pro project
• Configuring the parameters of a video file to be transcoded and imported into Premiere Pro

The first release of the plugin has been developed by Tecom Group and provided to the customer in a record-short 3 months. The R&D team used Adobe CEP (Common Extensibility Platform) technology which allows creating software modules specifically for Adobe products. ExtendScript programming language was used to interact with the Adobe Premiere Pro program interface. This language was developed by Adobe based on EcmaScript3, JavaScript standard dated 1999. This was the main difficulty in communicating with the Adobe API — the vast majority of components available in more young languages were missing. To simplify interaction with the Adobe API, the experts of Tecom Group prepared a software “layer” using Microsoft TypeScript. Moreover, Tecom Group participated in the development of Kumulate GUI displayed in the plugin window.

Business Value

With the Adobe Premiere Pro plugin, Masstech expands the audience of the Kumulate platform. Adobe Premiere Pro users have gained an access to their entire inventory across any type of online or deeper storage tier, including cloud, local disk, optical disk, and LTO.

All assets on all storage tiers are available to Premiere Pro users within the new panel powered by diverse search options. The plugin helps users to quickly access their content libraries from Adobe Premiere Pro thus dramatically speeding up their workflows.

The plugin is available for Windows and Mac OS users.
